Leadearly's Success Series Feature Interview this month is with a sustainability advocate and inspiring marketing professional, who got into 4 of the most competitive programs around the world. Isla, generously shares her experience, highlighting her hopes, fears and best advice that helped her succeed.

Q) Which universities and courses did you apply to and why?
I applied to NYU SPS (MSc Integrated Marketing), Columbia SPS (MSc Strategic Communications), Imperial Business School (MSc Marketing), HEC Paris (MSc in Marketing), and LSE (Global Master's in Management).
With a background in marketing across luxury companies and an undergraduate degree in Management and Modern Languages, I wanted to specialise in marketing and build expertise. Initially, I considered studying abroad in the US, but given the current economic climate and visa uncertainty for international students, I applied to European programs last round (HEC/Imperial/LSE) as well.
Q) What were your biggest concerns before starting the application process?
I didn't have a GMAT score, which prevented me from applying to traditional MiM programs at most top schools. This led me to explore Masters in Marketing programs instead. I also worried my luxury retail background wouldn't be competitive enough.
Q) What was the hardest part of the application process?
The interviews were the most challenging. I was extremely nervous for the online Kira-style assessments at NYU, Columbia and Imperial. Another difficulty was knowing when to submit and not obsessing over perfecting every detail. Applying in the final round was risky (I didn't receive an interview from HEC) but it worked out for both Imperial and LSE.
Q) What was the most helpful advice you received to get into LSE Global MiM?
Force yourself to be confident, especially in interviews. Practice positive self-talk.
Q) How did you decide on LSE Global MiM given the multiple offers you received?
I applied to LSE's GMiM without a GMAT through their UK undergraduate exemption, submitted in May, and received my offer three weeks later. It immediately became my top choice. The GMiM offered everything I wanted: a MiM program to strengthen my finance and quantitative skills, excellent brand recognition with international exposure, and the opportunity to study abroad again through the prestigious CEMS alliance (a network of 33 leading business schools globally). While it is a more expensive program than traditional MiMs due to the 2-year structure and exchange component, the investment felt worthwhile for the opportunities it provides.
Q) Why did you work with an admissions consultant?
I knew the Masters application process had nuances I wasn't familiar with. Working with a consultant helped me perfect my CV and letters, build confidence, and maintain a steady timeline.
Q) What advice would you give future LSE Global MiM applicants?
My cohort is international, friendly, and hardworking. Be authentic in your application and clear about your goals. Show exactly how LSE will help you achieve them. If you are applying without a GMAT, make sure your application is strong in other areas.
Q) What do you think LSE valued in your application?
I focused on fashion and sustainability. My international internship experience demonstrated adaptability—important for a program with a mandatory exchange year. I've been told my application stood out as "different" and "well-rounded," with diverse work experiences across multiple countries.
Q) What makes LSE's Global MiM unique?
We're well-supported as students. As a 2-year program, we connect with second-years currently on exchange, creating strong cohort bonds. The second year is what truly distinguishes this program, pursuing either a CEMS double degree or MBA exchange semester (there is the option to stay at LSE and specialise). This offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for deep international exposure and a prestigious additional credential that sets you apart in the job market.
Q) What are your first impressions of LSE?
I love it. The university offers extensive resources for personal growth, including frequent industry fairs, and an excellent careers department that provides tailored support. It's academically demanding but in a motivating way, and the campus facilities are a pleasure to work in. I'm now pursuing roles in brand strategy, consulting, and luxury.
It is such a pleasure to work with talented applicants such as Isla who often don't even recognise the uniqueness of their profile and the abundance of value they offer universities. We wish her all the success and can't wait to follow her story as she will no doubt make her mark on the world, in her unique charming way.
