IMD Business School: MBA overview & admissions

The IMD MBA is a one-year, full-time programme based in Lausanne, Switzerland, built around leadership development and general management for a deliberately small, highly international cohort. Students enrol in January and graduate the following December, earning a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) degree worth 90 ECTS. It is one of Europe's most selective one-year MBAs, and it attracts a particular kind of applicant: experienced, internationally minded, and ready for an intense, personal year rather than a large-cohort experience.

I coach applicants across the top European schools, and IMD comes up constantly in conversations with candidates weighing it against INSEAD, HEC Paris and London Business School. Below is what you actually need to know before you apply: the structure, the class, the requirements, the deadlines, and the cost, all verified against IMD's official pages as of August 2026.

What is the IMD MBA?

Here is the programme at a glance:

  • Location: Lausanne, Switzerland

  • Duration: One year, full-time (January start, December finish)

  • Degree: Master of Advanced Studies (MAS), 90 ECTS

  • Cohort: Small and highly international, with 34 nationalities in the current class

  • Accreditation: Triple-accredited (AACSB, EQUIS, AMBA), plus Swiss institutional accreditation

  • Focus: Leadership development, general management, experiential learning

IMD's defining feature is its size. Where INSEAD and LBS run cohorts in the hundreds, IMD keeps its MBA class small by design. That produces an unusually high faculty-to-student ratio, a great deal of individual coaching, and a year that is as much about personal leadership development as it is about business fundamentals.

How is the IMD MBA structured?

The programme runs across a single calendar year and moves from foundations to real-world application. Broadly, students progress through core general-management teaching early in the year, then into a series of hands-on projects, including consulting-style engagements with real companies, followed by electives and international exposure in the later months.

The through-line is experiential learning. IMD leans heavily on live projects, group work and personal coaching rather than lecture-hall theory alone. Each student also works closely with a personal leadership coach across the year, which is one of the programme's most distinctive elements and a large part of why applicants choose it.

Who is the IMD MBA for?

IMD is designed for early-to-mid-career professionals with a track record of achievement and genuine leadership potential. Because the class is small, admissions is selective about fit and contribution, since they are building one cohort that will work intensively together for a year.

The official profile of the current class looks like this:

  • Typical work experience: 3–8 years (averaging around six)

  • Typical age range: 25–34

  • Nationalities represented: 34

  • Typical GMAT range: 555–755

If you have fewer than three years of experience, IMD is likely too early for you; if you have well over a decade, the Executive MBA is usually the better route. The sweet spot is someone with a few years of real professional progression who wants an intense, transformational year and thrives in a small, close-knit environment.

What are the IMD MBA admission requirements?

To apply, you'll need:

  • A bachelor's degree (or equivalent)

  • A minimum of two years' full-time postgraduate work experience (the typical class range is 3–8 years)

  • A GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment score less than five years old. IMD recommends aiming for 555 or above, and there is no test waiver

  • One professional recommender from a business-related source (professional email addresses only)

  • A one-page CV using IMD's official template (other formats are not accepted)

  • Degree transcripts and diplomas, with official English or French translations

  • A non-refundable application fee of CHF 150

English proficiency isn't submitted as a separate test score up front. The entire programme is taught in English, and the admissions team assesses your language ability during the assessment day.

What are the IMD MBA application deadlines for the January 2027 intake?

There are six application rounds for the intake starting in January 2027. IMD reviews applications round by round, and applying earlier generally means an earlier decision and stronger access to scholarships.

Important, as of August 2026: Rounds 1–4 for the January 2027 intake have already closed. Only the 15 September 2026 and 13 October 2026 rounds remain open. If IMD is your target for a January 2027 start, you are now working against the September round, and I'd treat that as the realistic deadline to aim for rather than leaving it to the final October round.

Each application deadline is linked to a specific assessment day, offered either online or on-campus in the weeks following the deadline.

How does the IMD assessment day work?

This is where IMD differs most from other schools. Rather than a single interview, shortlisted candidates are invited to a full assessment day, available virtually or in person, that combines a mix of individual and group exercises with the interview itself. Depending on the round, this can include an elevator pitch, a team task, class observation where possible, and networking with the MBA team.

The purpose is mutual evaluation. IMD gets a rounded, real-time read on how you think, communicate and collaborate, and you get a genuine feel for the culture before committing. It rewards authenticity over rehearsal: candidates who try to perform a "perfect MBA applicant" tend to do worse than those who show how they actually work with others.

How much does the IMD MBA cost?

For the current MBA year, the fees are:

  • Tuition: CHF 80,000

  • Mandatory fees: CHF 17,500 (covering the pre-programme course, all learning materials, leadership and career coaching, project-related travel, weekday lunches, and campus facilities)

  • Total programme cost: CHF 97,500

On top of that, IMD advises budgeting roughly CHF 30,000–36,000 for living expenses across the year in Lausanne, about CHF 3,000 a month for housing, food, transport and insurance.

On scholarships: approximately 48% of IMD MBA students receive a scholarship or bursary, and more than half of scholarship funding goes to women. IMD offers a mix of merit- and need-based awards, and, importantly, you apply for scholarships within the main application, not afterwards. My standing advice to candidates is to prepare the scholarship elements alongside your admissions application from the start, rather than treating them as an afterthought once you're admitted.

How does IMD compare to other one-year European MBAs?

If you're choosing between IMD, INSEAD, HEC Paris and LBS, the honest differentiator is scale and style. INSEAD offers a large, globally mobile cohort across multiple campuses and unmatched network reach. LBS gives you London, flexibility on programme length, and a huge alumni base. IMD offers the opposite of scale: a small, intense, coaching-heavy year where your development is highly visible and highly personal.

Neither model is better in the abstract; it depends on what you want. If you're energised by a large network and structured recruiting, the bigger programmes may suit you. If you want a transformational year in a small group where the faculty and coaches genuinely know you, IMD is hard to beat. This is exactly the kind of trade-off I work through with candidates before they commit to a target school.

Choosing a one-year MBA, and getting into one as selective as IMD, is a big decision, and the assessment-day format rewards candidates who prepare properly.
