  • Purpose: It is designed as a bridge to long-term employment. It does not lead directly to settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain), but it provides the crucial time needed to gain UK work experience and find an employer willing to sponsor a Skilled Worker visa.


You must apply for the Graduate visa before your student visa expires and after your university has notified the Home Office of your successful course completion.

The ultimate goal for most graduates staying in the UK is to transition from the Graduate Route to a Skilled Worker visa. This is the primary long-term work visa and the main path to settlement.


The core requirements for a Skilled Worker visa are:

2. Appropriate Skill Level: The job must typically be at or above the RQF 3 level (equivalent to A-levels).


3. Salary Threshold: This is often the most significant hurdle. The general minimum salary threshold is now £41,700 per year, or the specific 'going rate' for your occupation, whichever is higher.


However, there are crucial concessions for "new entrants" to the labour market, which includes those switching from a Graduate visa. For new entrants, the general salary threshold is lowered to £33,400 per year, or 70% of the going rate for the job, whichever is higher. This makes it significantly more accessible for recent graduates to secure sponsorship.

This permit allows you to work without any restrictions, for any employer, without the employer needing a separate work permit. A key advantage is that if you find a job as a highly skilled migrant during this year, you benefit from a significantly lower minimum salary requirement for the subsequent work permit. You must apply within three years of graduating.
